There was a doctor who witnessed a near-death experience of his patient. His patient went through a car accident, leaving him with multiple injuries to his head that nearly killed him. In his own words, he seemed to "pop out of his body." He saw flashbacks of his own life in the form of pictures and vividly sensed he was entering a tunnel of darkness that eventually lead him into the light. He felt he was being guided by a "being made up of light." Assessing all the moral decisions and good things he had done in his life, he felt overwhelmed with feelings of love, tenderness, and warmth. This experience made him deeply understand that his life had always had a purpose.
Hearing such stories, or experiencing the loss of our loved ones often gives us a reality check and makes us question the true meaning of our lives. What are the things that do matter in reality?
Surah Abasa
This surah gives a vivid illustration of this matter.
"on that Day every person will flee from their own siblings"- Surah Abasa, ayah 34
"That day" refers to the Day of Judgement. A particular word, fara'a is used for running in this verse, which means running from something that scares you. A simple run in the park, for example, will not be considered a fara'a. But running away from a wild dog can be considered as so.
Then these verses advance to closer relationships; running away out of fear from parents, spouses, and children. It's astonishing that on that day, people will fear their own families!
Usually, in this world, when faced with a difficulty, they naturally turn to the ones closest to them. But on that day, not only will people avoid their family members - they will actually flee from them!
Why is this so? People are closer and in greater contact with their families than others. This makes it much easier to abuse their rights. They are also often nicer and more polite to strangers, but are more likely to get into fights with their closest family members than others.
So when they come in contact with their family members, they will remember how they had taken advantage of them and abused their rights. Or, another interpretation is that people will be terrified by the assumption that their parents, children, or brothers will ask them to lend some of their good deeds if they're in a difficult situation.
It's fascinating how the closest relationships - the ones people are typically the most worried about in this world - siblings, parents, children, initially, won't even matter! This situation is called nafsa nafsi in Arabic - everyone for themselves. Losing family members in life can be the most grieving experience - but even those relationships won't matter initially on that day! However, this all occurs in the first stage; people do eventually speak to one another on the Day of Judgement.
The verses further progress to explain how everyone will be over-occupied, obsessed, and unbothered by everything occurring in their surroundings. They will be busy, recalling all that they did back on earth. What were their efforts towards, what did they strive for in life, and what were their goals?
Surah Takwir
This next surah is a continuation of the previous. In ayah number 14, Allah states on that day, every person will know what "it has sent forward." This refers to the deeds of everyone in this world. This serves as a reminder to put the most beautiful, sincere, excellent of deeds. On that day, people's bank accounts, homes, or friends won't matter. Everyone will know exactly how they lived on earth. What will truly matter is the good a person sends forward for that day. This doesn't need to be anything big, it can also be manifested in small gestures, like making space for someone when they walk into the room, checking in on someone by calling them, buying someone a cup of coffee, giving someone an encouraging word, praying a little extra, or just simply smiling 😊. Because this is what truly matters in the end
